Test, train and transform yourself - a guide to fitness testing
A major motivation for getting fit and healthy is to see the physical results - but it’s not all about weight loss. There are many other ways to gauge the success of your exercise programme and healthier lifestyle.
So what do we do?
- Assess muscular strength, body fat distribution, blood pressure and cardiac fitness
- VO2 exercise test – measures how many calories your body needs for exercise
- Provide unique statistics about your general state of health
- Identify the areas that need to be concentrated on
and how do we do it?
Here at The Exercise Lab we’re one of the first in the country to use cutting edge technology called Fitmate. This state-of-the-art equipment has until now been limited to use in gauging the fitness of top athletes such as Paula Radcliffe.
- It uses oxygen analysis to measure cardiovascular fitness levels (these help us to accurately identify your strengths and weaknesses)
- We design bespoke training to specifically address these areas
- Your progress is monitored at regular intervals
Fitmate is also a key piece of technology for anyone training for specific events, such as marathons, as it allows you to plan your training really accurately.
Take a look at our Products and Latest News sections for more information about Fitmate.
The VO2 exercise test is designed to help people train smarter by working out which forms of exercise burn the most calories. So whether you’re –
- An athlete wanting to fine-tune your training programme
- A former couch potato who wants to burn calories and get fit
- Someone who’s been exercising but not getting the desired results
- Someone who wants to lose weight
get in touch to find out how VO2 exercise testing can really help you to get the results you want or contact us today to find out more about how our other fitness testing methods can help you.

Get Fit, Stay Fit – a guide to fitness training
Exercise is the single most important factor associated with good health and here at The Exercise Lab we work with people from all walks of life to help them on the road to a healthier lifestyle.
We have a wealth of experience of working with people with -
- Disabilities
- Heart problems
- Obesity
So no matter what your level of fitness or medical history we will listen, advise and set you realistic programmes that will help you to achieve your goals and make you feel fitter and healthier.
Exercising doesn’t have to mean dragging yourself to the gym every day and pushing yourself beyond your limits. If you’ve never set foot in a gym before, you’re not the only one!
You can even start by setting small goals –
- Go for a 10 minute walk after your lunch or evening meal
- Get off the bus one stop earlier
- Take the stairs rather than the lift
- Walk to work
- Walk the kids to school
Exercise doesn’t have to be hard and it doesn’t have to be long but it does need to be regular. If you stick to the ‘little and often’ principle the long term benefits will really show.
An important part of any fitness programme is being able to monitor progress and we have specialist fitness testing equipment available that enables us to test and measure your progress from day one. See our section on fitness testing to find out more.
But of course to be fit and healthy you may also need to make some changes to your lifestyle and at The Exercise Lab our programmes include advising you about this.
We talk to you about –
- your diet - food and eating patterns
- alcohol consumption
- smoking
- general health
We will then set you a programme and advise you about what foods you should and shouldn’t be eating.
As with exercise, a healthy diet needs to be adopted as part of your everyday life and needs to be a long term lifestyle change.
By taking up regular exercise and a healthier diet you will –
- Boost your energy levels
- Reduce the risk of illnesses
- Aid your circulation
- Sleep better
- Improve your skin
- Reduce stress levels
- Burn off excess fat
So what are you waiting for? Your body is the only one you have you can’t replace it when it starts to wear out! So give us a call today to find out more about how we can help you to look after your body and feel good about yourself.
